Messages From Our Kids

Hear from the kids that we have helped through our efforts over the years.

It's moments like this that restore the faith that people are good and never forget a beautiful and bright soul like Jonathan. Jonathan will always be a "KAC Kid" and his mom received an honorary diploma from Lavelle Prep Charter School yesterday. Unfortunately Jonathan was taken away by cancer from his amazing mom and family way too soon but his memory and legacy remains etched in our hearts and minds forever. God Bless!

In 2011, when I was only 13 years old, I was diagnosed with leukemia. I was treated at Staten Island University Hospital, at the north site. At the time of my stay in the hospital my dad introduced me to Mark Russo, Chairman of Kids Against Cancer. During a time of shock and confusion he offered my family and I hope and showed us that we still must continue to enjoy, appreciate and fight for life. My father was running back and forth, taking care of things in the house for my brother and sisters. Mark and Kids Against Cancer were able to give aid to my father, financially and emotionally that no one else could give. Mark also visited me numerous times in the hospital which made my days bright like the sun. Kids Against Cancer didn’t just stop there, they provided my siblings and I gifts for the holidays and even a year later, gave my family and I the experience to go see a Broadway play of our choice. Kids Against Cancer introduced me to Make A Wish Foundation and I was granted a wish to go to the Bahamas. I am writing this letter, saying I am cancer free and my family and I are going to celebrate my wish together! Mark taught me that life shouldn’t be put on hold, to enjoy every experience and live life to its fullest. No words can ever fully express how truly thankful I am for all that he has done for my family.

Not only has Brianna beaten cancer twice, but she has now earned herself a nursing degree from Wagner College. Brianna says "I want to become a nurse practitioner oncologist. I want to take my past and bring it into my future. I want to help people get through what this terrible disease does to people.”

My family and I wear simply stunned when we received the KAC package and your incredible donation. We are humbled and grateful beyond words; Sadie was wide-eyed with amazement as we explained to her and he is working on some “art” for you now! Sadie is still recovering from her Cyber Knife treatment and we are taking things day-by-day.

But we remain positive because of the incredible goodness in this world from people like you!

We learned from you Joshua. With tears in my eyes still know that you are always going to live and your legacy will be known! To those of you reading this it’s our promise to Joshua. He really was an angel. There were foundations that helped but the closest to my heart who gave not just things but themselves! I will never forget it ever! Kids Against Cancer is an amazing group of people.
